Episode 4 - Pete's World

Nobody seems to like Pete Campbell - but last episode we got to see a more personal side to his character and understand some of the challenges he's facing.
    1. How do Pete's work life and personal life spill over and affect one another?
    2. Do you sympathize with his character?
    3. How would you describe the relationship between Pete and Trudy?
    4. Does Pete's frustration have to do with gender, power, or something else?

  1. Peter's father doesn't think his job is an important one. Being an adman is not what his father wants him to be, and this affects his personal life when he asks his parents for money.
I like Peter but I would like him to have a more strong personality to confront his dad and Don, and be more honest with Trudy.
I think that Pete's frustration has to do with the fact that his family does not support him with his life's decisions.

  2. I agree with MarĂa, and Pete's frustration could be related to gender, power, and family issues all at the same time. Gender and power are related, I think, because men have an ancestral need to feel "powerful", one way or another. That your DAD doesn't approve of what you do for a living can really screw up your sense of "manhood"! Especially if you are compared negatively with a sibling.

    See ya!

  3. I didn’t like Peter at the very beginning of the story. As we have been discussing in class, he was such a brown-noser. Besides, I didn't like him going to Peggy's place the day before his wedding. I don't really approve of Pete doing that.
Now, I have to confess that in a way I feel pity for him. He felt frustrated because he knew he wouldn’t be able to buy the apartment for his wife. Besides, his father didn't think his jod was worthwile and didnt want to give him money to buy that apartment either. To make matters worse he was “fired” from his job.BINGO! POOR PETE!! Now that I know him a little bit more I can say I sympathize him Peter.
Pete’s relationship with his wife is nice, but they’ll probably have problems in the future because Pete doesn’t express freely all what he thinks. Trudy seems to have a strong personality, and that prevents him from being totally honest with her.

  4. Great comments guys! Have you ever been in Pete's shoes? Do you think it's common for young people to feel the way he does toward his parents?
