Episode 4 - New Amsterdam

What is going on between Betty and Glen (Helen Bishop's son)?

  • Do you think their relationship is cute or uncomfortable? Why?
  • Do you think it’s okay for Betty to give Glen a lock of her hair? What would you do if you were in her shoes?

        1. I think the relationship between Glen and Betty is very uncomfortable for the woman. Whe he tells her that she is very pretty, she feels very akward and does not know how to react. However, I guess she realizes that the kids needs attetion and that's why she accepts to give him a lock of her hair.
If I were her I think I would have given him a lock of my hair too.

        2. In my opinion, their relationship is very uncomfortable. The boy has a problem or just lack of attention. I want to know what is going on inside his head...
The woman shouldn´t have given him a lock of her hair since, for me, it is strange. What does he want to do with it????????
When I saw that part of the episode, I felt uncomfortable. I dont know why. I expect to know more about Glen, he is a very unusual character.

        3. Hi all, it is definitely awkward, and I don't know for sure what is going on, but I juggle with these possibilities:

          a) Glen does not get the care and attention that he needs from Helen, and he craves for it.

          b) Lacking a fatherly figure, Glen did not have the chance to learn much about man-woman interaction. He is simply attracted to Betty, but it comes out in weird ways, because of his poor socialization.

          c) Glen, lacking a fatherly figure to identify himself with, has already started to identify himself with his mother, and sees Betty as something even more desirable to become (a princess!), that is why he "wants her hair".

        4. I totally agree with Cande and María. In my opinion, what the boy needs is attention and to feel loved.
It is a strange scene since we don't know why the boy wants a lock of her hair and why she ends up giving it to him. As fas as I'm concerned, the boy is growing up and he is experiencing many feelings and desires that he has never felt before...perpahs, this new stage makes him behave in that way.
If I were Betty, I would have given him an excuse and I wouldn't have given the lock of muy hair to him.

        5. Hi people! I totally agree with you, but I would like to add that for me Betty feels the situation is kind of strange but at the same time she likes to be asked for the lock of her hair, she feels someone pays attention to her...When she tells her psychiatrist about this situation saying the boy needs attention, I believe she is proyecting her own feeling of loneliness and lack of attention on Glen...I don't know, maybe is "cualquiera" jaja but it´s what I felt when I saw that part of the movie...byeee!

        6. Well, for me that scene was pretty awkward…and while watching it I thought “This boy has mental problems”, like someone who is obsessed with somebody / something else. Did you see his expression when he was sitting on the couch? Poor little thing! …as you have all said, he needed LOVE and MORE ATTENTION from both of his parents!
When he asked Betty for a lock of her hair I felt sad. It’s like he wanted, in a way, to have something from that pretty lady with him. If I had been in Betty’s shoes, I’d have done the same thing to make him feel better.

        7. Oh how interesting! Most of you felt that the exchange between Betty and Glen was creepy.

Would anybody say that Betty and Glen shared a sweet bond? That they're two outsiders who are both a little bit lost, trying to find their niche in a strict society?

On an aside, I think that the custom of giving a lock of hair to someone you love used to be pretty common in the USA, maybe during the Victorian era. It's supposed to be a symbol of sacrifice and devotion...or maybe it's a precaution that your lover takes so he/she can clone you after you die. JUST KIDDING!

You might have read the short story "Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry, which touches on the concept of sacrificing your hair as a symbol for love and devotion. If you forgot, check out the link here: http://www.auburn.edu/~vestmon/Gift_of_the_Magi.html

People also used to wear a loved one's hair in a locket on a necklace:

I'm wondering if there's an etymological link between "lock" and "locket." Is the source of these two words related somewhere in history? BONUS POINTS TO ANYONE WHO CAN FIND OUT!
