Helen Bishop

We met the neighborhood divorcée, Helen Bishop, in the last episode. What's your opinion about the following questions:
  • In what ways is Helen different from the other ladies in her neighborhood?
  • Why do the housewives treat her so passive-aggressively?
  • What is it about her status as a single lady that threatens the wives so much?

  1. Being a single mother who has to work to provide for her family, Helen is considered different from the other ladies in her neighbourhood. There are differences even in clothes. In contrast to the other ladies, Helen wears trousers. It is like Helen is taking many roles which were just reserved for the men.

The ladies in the neighbourhood not only gossip about her marital status but also about her uncommon habit of taking long walks on her own. They speak about Helen behind her back and these “perfect housewives” consider Helen a threat as she is a liberal graduate, divorced, young and beautiful lady who may seduce their husbands with her eccentricity. That is why, these women treat her so passive-aggressively.

  2. First of all, Helen is different from the other women because she is a divorced woman, which at that time was not acceptable.
Helen is different from the other women of the neighbourhood because she manages to live on her own, she's more practical and she can handle her things without a man in her life.
The housewives are afraid that Helen might flirt with their husbands, as she is atractive, with a strong personality, independent and SINGLE, of course. This is the reason why they might treat her so badly.

  3. I agree with all that has been said, and, personally, I think that the other women hate Helen because they secretly want to be like her (and they can't).

  4. Helen is a very controversial woman as she is divorced and has to raise a child by her own. However, I think that the rest of the women hate her because they would like to be liberal and independent as she is but they can´t as they are married. They envy Helen!

  5. First of all, Helen is a divorced woman who has to WORK. In my opinion, she is considered different since she is able to live without a man and this was almost unacceptable.
Secondly, I think the rest of the women are afraid of Helen because she is attractive, independent and strong.

  7. Hi people!

Well, what else can I say? I agree with all of you guys!

Helen Bishop is the current subject of gossip for women in her neighbourhood because she is divorced and she doesn't have problems in taking long walks alone....not a common thing in those days.
I go along with what you said about Helen being the envy of all women in the neighbourhood. I think they want unconsciously (or maybe not) to be like her: FREE & DESIRED BY MEN.

    See you in class!
